Third
grade teacher Charles Robshaw first approached Damayan in December
2005. He wanted to involve his after school ecology class in a gardening
project before the end of the year. We helped them with a simple
plan to beautify some barren areas at the school with butterfly
plants and herbs.
In 2006, we continued
to work with Charles Robshaw and with first grade teacher Sally
Feehrer to plan and install a larger vegetable, herb and butterfly
garden in the main courtyard. The construction of this garden was
supported through a PBS Kids Go! – Eeko World Project grant.
The garden was planted in Fall 2006 and has been growing abundant
and beautiful produce. As is often the case, the efforts of a few
teachers and their students has produced something beautiful that
the whole school can become involved with over time.
This relatively
new garden is thriving and it is a real joy to hear how these dedicated
teachers bring learning to life using the garden:
The garden
is doing great and is a real source of pride for the school.
We've cooked up some of the collards and I saw a group of
kids today walking back to class with the biggest radishes
I've ever seen. Sugar peas are starting to show up. I'm forwarding
a note from our media specialist.
Trust you had a great thanksgiving,
Charles

Charles,
I haven't
told you how impressed I am with the garden. It is magnificent!
One day there was nothing there and now it's a sight to behold.
I am especially happy because it provides great subject matter
for my photography students to study. The different textures
and colors have given them something more to see than the
typical fare in the courtyard. Some of the extreme close ups
that have been taken are teaching students that seeing is
more than just a look or a glance. There is beauty in the
natural world that surrounds us everyday. Thanks for your
contribution with this living, growing work of art.
